Lithium-Ion Nanophosphate® is at the heart of A123’s Hypersonic battery packs. Using patented lithium-ion chemistry developed at A123 Systems and built on initial developments from the heralded Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Hypersonic packs provide high levels of performance and abuse tolerance unmatched by any other battery chemistry. With their low-impedance design and high power capability, Hypersonic packs are capable of 30C continuous discharge and 60C pulse discharge. They can also be connected together to create custom configurations for almost any electric application.
Perhaps the most important benefit is that Hypersonic batteries are safer and more tolerant of abuse than Li-Po batteries. A123 packs are not prone to thermal runaway (the leading cause of fire in Li-Po batteries), and will tolerate some over-voltage and overdischarge. Their laser-welded aluminum canisters protect the cells from damage due to dropping or crashing.
