Basically, there are three different types of crawlers: 2.2 Class which is the most popular, Super Class which is typically unlimited, and Scale Classes that include 2.2 and 1.9 vehicles.
The 2.2 Class limits the wheel size to a maximum of 2.2 inches, maximum wheelbase of 12.5 inches, and maximum outside track width of 12.5 inches. The 2.2 Class is by far the most popular class with vehicle kits, parts, and accessories being readily available at nearly all hobby retailers. The typical 2.2 crawler is shaft driven with one electric motor delivering the power through a transmission, although competitors have recently started using dual motor setups with one electric motor per axle; this allows for much more precise control. For 2.2 crawler competitions, only front steering is allowed - no four wheel steering.
Super Class crawlers are commonly built around the Tamiya Clod Buster axles and are somewhat unlimited in regards to length, width, and wheel size, although course design can limit the wheelbase and outside track width. Super Class crawlers can utilize four wheel steering and many competitors will have two ESC's for completely independent control of the front and rear motors. With four wheel steering, independent motor control, super-sized wheels and tires, extra long wheelbase, and more, expect crazy performance from a Super Class crawler.
Scale Class crawlers are a completely different breed. The two different classes of scale rigs are based on wheel size - 1.9 inch and 2.2 inch. With Scale Class, the main emphasis is realism. Very specific rules have been established to keep the vehicles in these two classes looking as realistic as possible. For example, wheels and tires must be positioned within the fender wells of the body and bumpers, tailgates, doors, and fenders must be intact. For Scale competition, not only performance is scored but also points are awarded for realism, items such as detailed interiors, working lights, and functional spare tires will all earn points towards a win.
