Come Fly With Us Today

RAMS RC Airplane Club

RAMS - Operating for Public Benefit, the Milwaukee County RC Model Airplane FieldThe Rainbow Aero Modelers Society (RAMS) was founded in 1980 at the newly opened Milwaukee County R/C Model Airplane Field, on Oakwood Road in Franklin, Wisconsin. The Society operates the field on behalf of the County, selling licenses to fly there, and adopting rules of safety, conduct, and courtesy. It uses the license fees to maintain the field.

The RAMS focus on fixed wing aircraft, offering free instruction, whether powered by glow or gas fuel engines, electric motors, or turbines that run on jet fuel. A sister club at the same field, SWARM - SE Wisconsin Area Rotory Modelers, fly R/C helicopters, and also offer free instruction.

Both clubs offer regular monthly meetings, and publish a monthly newsletter. Each belongs to the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), a national model aircraft organization in Muncie, Indiana. AMA Pilot membership provides liability insurance and a comprehensive monthly magazine. The RAMS are AMA club #1264, and also belong to the Milwaukee R/C Association.

We’re Back Flying!

The field has come back fast, I did several flights today and the field was smooth and nice.

We’re not 100% yet but, the main runway was in very nice shape and lots of members were flying with no problem.

We put up 100 sand bags along the creek, with another 200 going in soon. Hopefully we will get a jump start on any new flooding? Perhaps this will do the trick?  We’ll know come the next heavyrain but, I think we stopped the trickling in water that kept the field flooded after the rains, hopefully we put an end to that!?

Anyway, the field is nice, pilots are flying and it having fun.  Hope to see you all out flying.

How’s The Field?

Well the field is open and pilots are flying. We’re not 100% where we’d like to be but considering what we’ve had to deal with, I’d say we’re coming back in good shape. Once we’re 100% dry, we’ll use the DR to cut the heavy straw grass and open up the East West runways too. The water damage did turn grass into mud and we have to deal with that as well. The sand bags are on order and we’re ready to get those filled and in place once they show up. The field is on it’s way back from the worse rains ever recorded in Wisconsin history. Let’s hope it’ll be the last history weather record set here!

Fly In Doubtful

As of today, August 12th, we still have standing water on the field and more rains coming. The September Fly In doesn’t look like it’ll go as planned. An October Fun Fly (Picnic) looks more realistic.

Jack will make the call as soon as he has a real handle on just how bad the field is and how much we can recover once the rains end and we get a dry out period, but at this rate, when will that be? Who knows.

This summer is now in the record books and did a number on us, that’s for sure. Keep reading our posts for updates. Thanks
