Overview

The First American GT To Win The World Manufacturers Championship

Here is the 1964 car that finally gave Americans hope that they could beat the Europeans in international FIA competition. The Daytona Coupe was the first American car to win FIA’s GT class at Le Mans and then went on to win the World Manufacturer’s Championship in 1965 whetting Ford’s appetite for an overall win. Designed by Pete Brock and regarded by many as one of the most beautiful race cars ever built, Carrol Shelby's Daytona Coupe was a watershed racing car for America and set the stage for the GT40 and an era of American domination of international endurance racing.

HISTORY

One of the most interesting of the Daytona Coupes was chassis #CSX2602. It was the 5th built and the last of the 4 coupes given to Carrozzeria Gransport to complete. From February through May of 1965 it competed in 5 races with good success finishing 2nd GT at Spa and Nurburgring in May and 2nd GT and 4th overall at Daytona in February. For all of those races it wore the familiar Shelby American team colors: Guardsman Blue with white stripes.

Came June and Le Mans and Ford wanted every coupe available to race as they were out to beat Ferrari for the World Manufacturers Championship. But they had already used up their allotment of entries. Rather than see one of their cars sit out the race they asked Georges Filipinetti, owner of the well known and well respected Swiss team, Scuderia Filipinetti, to enter the Shelby Coupe, with Ford paying the way of course.

So it was that the car competed in the distinctive Red and White national colors of Switzerland for this race only. To pile on the irony, the car was driven by Peter Sutcliffe and Peter Harper, two well known Ferrari drivers.

Of the 5 coupes entered, 4 including CSX2602 did not finish. But it didn’t matter for the championship as Ford closed out the season finishing first and second in each of the last two races.

After Le Mans, CSX2602 was returned to Alan Mann racing, repainted in the Shelby American team colors and never raced again.

Indeed, the GT40 did beat Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966, then again in 1967, ’68 and ’69, dominating endurance sports car racing over the entire period.

GT40 #8 Drivers: Sir John Whitmore/ Frank Gardner

In Europe one of the powerhouse teams of the 1960s was Alan Mann Racing. With the full support of Ford Europe, the team dominated the British and European Touring Car Championships among others. For this reason, Ford supplied the team with two of the astonishing new GT40 MkIIs to contest the 1966 Le Mans. The number 8 car was modified with some highly experimental light weight parts and given over to Sir John Whitmore and Frank Gardner.

The 29 year old Englishman Whitmore had won both the British and European Saloon Car Championships before joining the Ford effort at Le Mans in ‘66. He was educated at Eton College and the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy and was labeled the “racing baronet” in the British press.

His partner, Frank Gardner, though he had participated in 9 Formula 1 races in his career, was best known as a Touring and Sports Car specialist. The Australian was a tremendous all around sportsman who found success in swimming, boxing and motorcycle racing in addition to cars.

They put their car on the grid in 3rd for the start and were full of confidence. And though they started out well the clutch failed only 31 laps into the race and they were forced to retire.

Sir John retired from racing shortly afterward to run a large agribusiness, a Ford dealership and a design company. Two years later he sold all of his businesses and moved, first to Switzerland and then the USA, to study physics, psychotherapy and psychology. Ultimately he would use this training and his experience to found companies that coach companies on leadership.

Franks greatest successes would come after the 1966 Le Mans as would go on to win the British Touring Car Championship 3 times and the American Formula 5000 Championship. He eventually took over Alan Mann Racing and continued in racing as a team owner.

GT40 #6 Drivers: Mario Andretti/ Lucien Bianchi

It was Andretti’s first Le Mans in 1966 and he was driving for the powerful Holman-Moody team. Expectations were high. Mario had finished the prior year, his first as a professional, by winning both the USAC Champ Car National Championship along with the Rookie of the Year title. And he was winning races again in ’66 on his way to a second consecutive USAC Championship. So he could be excused for feeling unbeatable even though he had almost no sports car experience and had never done a 24 hour race.

The team paired Mario with frequent Formula 1 and sports car racer Lucien Bianchi. Despite his name, Bianchi was Belgian and came by his racing genes honestly: his father was a race mechanic. In spite of the potential, the speed just wasn’t there. The car, chassis XGT1, qualified 12th and would only complete about a quarter of the distance, 97 laps, before dropping out with a blown head gasket. Mario returned the next year but crashed out of the race. He would not return again until 1982 and continued trying until 2000. His best result a 3rd in 1983 driving with his son, Michael. As for Lucien, he came back to Le Mans in 1967 with Mario and DNF’d. However, when he returned again in 1968, this time with the John Wyer Team, he won the race overall driving another GT40. Lucien Bianchi would die the following year while practicing for Le Mans.

GT40 #3 Drivers: Dan Gurney / Jerry Grant

Gurney took the lead on the second lap of the 1966 LeMans and led for most of the race with Miles in second. Along the way they set the fastest lap ever and the fastest average speed. But their pace took a toll and they retired in the 17th hour with an overheating engine.

GT40 #2 Drivers: Bruce McLaren / Chris Amon

New Zealanders McLaren and Amon were in third behind the Miles and Gurney cars at LeMans in 1966 when Gurney retired late in the race. With the race coming to an end McLaren caught up to the slowing Miles and crossed the finish line a few feet back in second, as planned. But McLaren had lined up several yards in front of Miles at the start and because the rules determine the finish by the distance traveled Miles was demoted to second in what would become one of the most infamous finishes in motorsports history.

GT40 #1 Drivers: Ken Miles / Denis Hulme

After winning the Daytona 24 Hour earlier in the year, Miles had led much of the 1966 Le Mans race and was well ahead near the end when Ford decided they wanted their three cars to cross the line at the same time for a publicity photo. Miles was instructed to wait for the other two cars and duly crossed the finish line together. Only then did he learn that a technicality gave the win to McLaren. Miles, whose lifelong dream had been to win Le Mans, would never get another chance to achieve that goal. He was tragically killed later that same year while testing.
