Overview

In 1968, Southern Pacific subsidiary Cotton Belt (officially the St. Louis Southwestern Railway) received 20 cabooses from International Car Company. These were the first SP cabooses to use 50-ton trucks, starting the C-50 series of cabooses. In 1970, 1972, and 1974 SP returned to International Car Company for 181 cabooses, plus 16 for Cotton Belt in three groups.

For the next four years, SP did not acquire any new cabooses. Instead 207 older cabooses were rebuilt by the Sacramento Shops. In 1978, SP bought cabooses again. By then International Car was a division of PACCAR (formerly Pacific Car & Foundry). The 50 cars of the C-50-7 class were built at the same Kenton, Ohio plant as the previous C-50 series cars. In design they were similar to the previous C-50 cars with only a few changes. Their paint differed by having the roof painted the car body color, the road name was moved to the right of the bay window, and they featured an axle-end generator connection. They were also the first new cars in the 4000 series. In 1979 50 cars of the C-50-8 class were delivered, with some minor detail differences when compared to the earlier C-50-7 cars. In 1980 the C-50-9 class of 75 cars was delivered. The C-50-9 class was unique in that they were delivered without any windows in the car sides, in order to increase crew safety and reduce repair costs. They were also the last group of new cabooses delivered to SP.

SP car classification, such as C-50-7, indicate the type of car (“C” for caboose), the capacity of the trucks (50-ton), and the sequential order number (7).

Overview

For years railroads have hauled ethyl alcohol, or ethanol as it is better known. Ethanol is made mostly from corn and is used as an additive to oxygenate gasoline thus reducing pollution. It is also being used in a mostly raw form as an alternative to gasoine. Most of this usage is in the Midwest states like Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Indiana where there is a
plentiful supply of corn.

In 2004 it was mandated by the federal government that ethanol be used to replace MBTE as an additive to oxygenate all gasoline in the state of California. Since California is not a corn producing state the ethanol has to be shipped in from states with large corn crops and ethanol plants. This ethanol traffic boomed in 2004 as several million gallons were needed by refineries
in the Los Angeles harbor area alone, with an additional 800 million gallons needed in the entire state.

To meet growing demand for new tank cars, UTLX Manufacturing has been expanding production capacity with a manufacturing facility in Alexandria, Louisiana. UTLX #205400 is the first car in the initial run from the new plant. The 30,000-gallon car is sized to stage the greatest number of cars at the producer's loading rack and still meet the 263,000-pound gross rail load limit. The Funnel-Flow(R) design facilitates complete bottom unloading.

Overview

Conceived in the early 1950s, the Airslide covered hopper design was developed for dry bulk ladings such as flour, starch, sugar and plastics. Prior to the late 1940s such ladings would have been packaged and shipped in boxcars, even for car load shipments. This added extra labor and time to package, load the containers in the boxcar, unload, and remove the lading from the shipment containers. Beginning in the late 1940s covered hoppers greatly simplified the process by allowing the bulk material to be loaded in through roof hatches and dumped out of the hopper bays.

However, dry, powdery commodities such as flour, starch, sugar and plastic granules do not always flow easily from a standard hopper bay; they have a tendency to compact and “cake up” in the bay, impeding the unloading process. To solve this problem the Fuller Company of Catasauqua, PA patented the Airslide concept. In an Airslide covered hopper the bays are formed into two narrow, steep-sided troughs with a layer of an air-permeable fabric at the bottom. Air is pumped through the material causing the lading to fluidize and flow easily through the hopper outlets. Airslide covered hoppers were built by General American Transportation (GATC), with production commencing in 1953. Originally there were two configurations - a single-bay, 2,600 cubic foot car, and a two-bay, 3,660 cubic foot car. Both were available with gravity or pneumatic outlets.

The all-new Athearn model is of a single-bay, 2,600 cubic foot car. This initial release is of what is typically referred to as an “early” version Airslide, the prototype having been built from 1955 to 1965, before major design changes were implemented. Airslide hoppers proved to be extremely popular cars, selling to numerous railroads throughout the country as well as private owners. They could be found in the paint schemes of nearly all the major roads with many seeing additional schemes throughout the years as the result of sales and mergers. They were also leased to many other railroads and private companies by GATC; painted for the lessee, but carrying GACX reporting marks. Operationally, they could be found serving flour mills, sugar refineries, bakeries, and plastic plants, among other industries.

Overview

The Santa Fe “El Capitan” offered coach travel between Chicago and Los Angeles using hi-level coaches along with a diner and lounge, its double decker hi-level cars providing a greater passenger capacity than traditional single-level trains. The El Capitan was revolutionary in that it offered excellent service and a train schedule that matched the speed of first class sleeper trains such as the "Super Chief" while remaining affordable to the every-day passenger. In fact, in January 1958 the "El Capitan" and "Super Chief" trains were consolidated to run together, though in peak traffic times such as Chrismas or the summer months the two would still keep separate train schedules to accomodate the increased ridership.

Based off of the C&NW Bi-Level commuter cars, the El Capitan Hi-Level cars were the first of their kind to be used in long distance service, pioneering the concept of affordable, reliable service and providing the basis for today's modern Amtrak fleets (the Amtrak Superliners were, in fact, built off the design of the original Santa Fe Hi-Level coaches and many Santa Fe cars ran alongside Superliners in the early days of Amtrak).

By the beginning of WWII, the majority of the classic USRA double-sheathed box cars and their clones were rebuilt with steel sides. More rebuilds followed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. By late 1948, close 14,000 of the original 24,500 USRA double-sheathed cars had been rebuilt with quite a degree of variation including the end, door and underframe. These steel side rebuilds were far more popular than their single-sheathed counterparts and make a great addition to the Atlas N scale product line.

This is a model of an ACF® Industries built general-purpose, single-compartment, 23,500 gallon, insulated, coiled, non-pressurized tank car. Our model represents cars built from 1969 and still in service today. A wide variety of products can be transported in this size and type of tank car. This includes asphalt, ethanol, fuel oil, metal sodium, molten phenol, paraffin wax, tallow, urethane polyol, and vegetable oil.
