Shop and club raceways, used in serious race competitions, are mainly "Routed Tracks" in which the guide slots for the whole racecourse are cut into large pieces of sheet material such as plywood or MDF. This provides a smooth and regular surface, enabling cars to accelerate their performance levels. The three different kinds of race ways generally used in competitions include 1/24 scale, 1/32 scale and HO scale slot car race track. 1/24 scale tracks used for race competitions are usually 6-8 lane routed tracks with either wooden or flexible plastic retaining walls. The raceways are generally located in commercial or purpose-built racing centers.

The most popular type of 1/24 slot car racing track is the "Blue King" (155 feet), the one which is well-known for its world records in 1/24 racing. The uniqueness of "King" race tracks lies in the fact that the various segments are named beginning from the main straight: bank, chute, deadman (corner), finger, back straight, 90 (corner), donut (corner), lead-on, and top-turn. Some other popular 1/24 model tracks are the tri-oval, hillclimb or hill climb, figure 8, various road course layouts, and different length straight drag racing strips.

Here at RCSLOT, in our shop, we have a 90’ Daytona style “Tri-Oval” track. It is 1/24 scale, eight lanes, and super fast. Customers race both 1/24 scale and 1/32 scale cars on the Daytona. Stock cars and truck-bodied cars can usually speed around the track with lap times of 1.9 – 2.5 seconds and faster at 32 mph, while flat-bodied cars and wing cars can zip at an amazing 40+ mph in as fast as 1.3 seconds – it’s really something to see.

1/32 scale is generally run on the same tracks as 1/24. HO Scale competition raceways are quite often between 20 and 60 ft in length and 4 to 6 lanes wide. Plastic tracks, often modified for enhanced performance, are commonly used in HO competition rather than in the larger scales.
