Rock Island bought its first six-motor freight power in 1973 in the form of eighteen U30Cs and ten SD40-2s. Although in poverty, and the Southern Pacific influence began to diminish, the Rock Island initially was luke warm to jumping on board with the SD40-2. Ordering a total of ten units, these locomotives were seen frequently in pool power on the Union Pacific and occasionally on the Southern Pacific too.

UP DESERT VICTORY FEATURES:

  • Large UP style plow
  • 88" nose with brake wheel

On February 27th, 1991 a tribute was paid by the Union Pacific Railroad to the American troops and UP employess serving in the Persian Gulf War. UP #3593, an EMD SD40-2, rolled out of the North Little Rock shops in full desert camouflage dress. Union Pacific railroad employees had repainted the SD40-2 as a symbol of their support for fellow workers called to active duty for the Persian Gulf War. Dedicated less than 12 hours before the cease-fire was announced, it was hailed as "Desert Victory" by UP railroaders. Our SD40-2 is prototypically modeled after UP's 3593, right down to the intricate camouflage patterns.

About the same time, the struggling Southern Pacific, realized the new paint formula used in Sacramento, in order to correspond with strict California EPA regulations, began to peel in an unexpected manner that mimicked desert camouflage. The railfan community dubbed SP #7319, perhaps the worst case of the peeling paint, as SP's "Desert Storm." We are offering both locomotives together.

PROTOTYPE INFO:

The SD40-2 was introduced in January 1972 as part of EMD’s Dash 2 series, responding to competing products from GE and ALCO. Reliability and versatility of the 3,000-horsepower SD40-2 made it the best-selling model in EMD’s history and the standard of the industry for several decades after its introduction. The SD40-2 was an improvement over the SD40, with modular electronic control systems similar to those of the experimental SD45X and DDA40X. The last SD40-2 delivered to a United States railroad was built in July 1984, with production continuing for railroads in Canada until 1988.
